"Judgement Day" could take place in 2027. It's a 900-year-old book, carefully preserved at the Vatican, that predicts it.
And Pope Francis could be the very last head of the Church, says Euronews. It's precisely him, and his wavering health, that have sparked renewed interest in this mysterious book, more commonly known as the "Prophecy of the Popes".
In 1139, the Irish Archbishop Saint Malachy is said to have had a vision during a trip to Rome. An event he allegedly wrote down, giving birth to this famous text predicting the end of the world. It was in 1595 that the Benedictine monk Arnold Wion discovered the existence of this book, claiming to have found these writings in the Vatican's secret archives.
Francis, the last pope
As Euronews reports, this work reveals the characteristics and names of 109 future popes, based on the day it was written. Here's an excerpt: "In the final period of the Holy Roman Church, Peter the Roman will reign, he will lead his flock through many tribulations, then the city of seven hills will be destroyed and the terrible Judge will judge the people. This is the end." The so-called "city of seven hills" is none other than Rome and, for some, Peter would be the successor to Francis due to his lung affection, making him the last pope.
Based on these predictions, many have begun to see the Argentine pontiff's illness as a sign of the end of the world. And according to some interpretations of the text, the prophecies indicate that "Judgement Day" will take place in 2027.
However, a team of modern researchers strongly dispute the book's origin, claiming it's nothing but a cryptic fake created for partisan political reasons, reports Euronews.
