Tourists and residents on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula were forced to evacuate following a new volcanic eruption, the sixth in the region over the past 18 months.

According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO), magma rose through the Earth’s crust, causing a fissure estimated to be between 700 and 1,000 meters long to open up.

This latest eruption follows one in April, during which protective barriers around the town of Grindavík were breached, prompting local authorities to evacuate both residents and visitors in the area.

The IMO stated that the eruption currently poses no threat to infrastructure and is considered “relatively weak,” according to an official statement.

Grindavík has remained a ghost town since 2023, when all 4,000 inhabitants were ordered to evacuate due to ongoing volcanic risk.

Unlike the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption, which severely disrupted air travel across Northern Europe for nearly a week, this eruption has not affected air traffic.
