An Italian man was unaware that a speed camera was positioned along his commute.

While speed cameras are becoming increasingly advanced, with some even equipped with AI, it was a perfectly ordinary camera that caught this Italian man on his way to work.

The device, well hidden behind a hedge, flashed the vehicle several times a day for six months on a road with a 70km/h speed limit. According to Sud Ouest, the driver only committed minor speeding offences, just barely over the authorised limit. However, when all these offences were added up, the bill became eye-watering: €28,000, while the man says he earns only €1,100 a month. “I am desperate,” he told the Italian newspaper La Stampa.

Now, the driver is hoping that the authorities will be lenient and reduce the amount of the fine. In his view, the speed camera, concealed behind a three-metre-high hedge, is there purely as a money-maker, rather than to ensure motorists’ safety.
