Decision met with disappointment

News that a junior Gaelic sports team from the West Bank in Palestine are not being allowed to enter Ireland for a week-long visit has been met with a mixture of disappointment and incomprehension.

The young players – between the ages of 11 and 13 – are part of a new sports team in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. The team was put together by Irishman John Redmond in 2024. He hoped to create an environment of hope for the kids “or at least distraction,” he told The Clare Champion.

The idea, which is frequent in junior sports teams, was for the children to stay with host families and attend Gaelic sports events, mostly hurling.

The necessary visas, however, had been delayed so much that the organisers decided to cancel the event rather than having to put the children and accompanying adults through unnecessary stress and disappointment.

“Careful consideration”

Ireland’s Department of Justice issued a statement acknowledging the disappointment that their decision entails, but says it gave “careful consideration” to the request. “Each visa application is decided on its own merits,” it added.

Ironically, Ireland is one of the latest nations to give formal recognition to Palestine, and there is widespread support for the Palestinian cause in the country.

The decision is doubly disappointing the young players are missing an opportunity to enjoy a break from a stressful environment; and Irish families and sports fans are missing an opportunity to enjoy one of the newest and most surprising members of the worldwide Gaelic sports family.
