On Sunday, Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa succeeded in setting a new world record in a women's only marathon race at the London Marathon.
The 28-year-old Tigst Assefa, who narrowly won silver at the Olympic Games after a strong final sprint from Dutch athlete Sifan Hassan, stopped the clock in London at 2h15:50. This top time is an improvement of the 'women only' world record by 26 seconds. That world record had been held for a year by Peres Jepchirchir.
In the men's race, victory in this World Marathon Major competition in London went to Sabastian Sawe in 2h02:27.
