The Brussels police officer who last Monday struck 11-year-old Fabian with a police van during a chase in Elisabeth Park in Brussels is being placed under electronic surveillance. The young Fabian lost his life on the spot. The officer was consequently arrested and fitted with an ankle bracelet while awaiting the further course of the investigation.

The officer who was behind the wheel of the police vehicle risks 20 to 30 years. The officer is suspected of maliciously obstructing traffic resulting in death. Searches have been conducted at the officers’ homes and mobile phones seized to investigate communications between officers after the accident. The traffic expert found that neither the blue lights nor the siren were active on the police vehicle. The speed exceeded 40 km/h in a park that is not accessible to vehicles. The driver of the e-scooter was in turn only 11 years old, while the minimum age for operating such a vehicle in Belgium is 16.

It remains unclear exactly what happened and how things could escalate to such an extent, resulting in the tragic, fatal outcome for the 11-year-old boy.
