A daily intake of vitamin D may slow down biological ageing, according to a clinical study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The research monitored 1,054 adults aged 50 and over for four years. Participants who took 50 micrograms of vitamin D3 daily showed less DNA damage and a smaller reduction in their telomeres, a key indicator of ageing.

This effect is equivalent to almost three years' delay in biological ageing. The study suggests that vitamin D may lower the risk of diseases such as dementia, Alzheimer's, cancer, and autoimmune conditions.

The research was conducted by Mass General Brigham, a research centre that is part of Harvard.
