On 19 June, the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU), working closely with their military counterintelligence department, shared the news on Telegram: a “traitor” had been caught red-handed.

What was this traitor’s plan? Barely enlisted in the Russian ranks, he was assigned the mission of targeting Ukrainian weapons present in the Black Sea. According to information from the Kyiv Post, the suspect, a 33-year-old serviceman, was a member of a Ukrainian unit responsible for controlling and protecting an anti-ship system: the R-360 Neptune, a modernised version of the Kh-35 system from the Soviet era. This is an anti-ship cruise missile with a range of over 200 kilometres, which has already been used against Putin’s fleet in the Black Sea.

He was about to report to Moscow

Moscow reportedly also tasked him with providing information on the positions of Neptune cruise missiles and Ukrainian training centres, so that attacks could be launched.

When he was arrested, and again according to the Kyiv Post, the Ukrainian serviceman was on the verge of reporting to Moscow. Furthermore, evidence of these operations was said to have been found on his phone.
