Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was the target of a foiled assassination attempt allegedly planned by a retired Polish national who had been recruited by the Soviet Union decades ago.
Lieutenant General Vasyl Malyuk, head of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), detailed the operation to local media. According to Malyuk, the Polish suspect was tasked with assassinating Zelenskyy at the Rzeszów–Jasionka Airport, either by using a drone or by shooting him with a sniper rifle.
The plot was thwarted thanks to joint efforts between the SBU and Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW).
Since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022, Zelenskyy has survived numerous assassination attempts—so many, in fact, that he recently admitted he's lost count.
Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to suffer under relentless Russian bombardments. On Monday alone, 14 civilians were killed in a wave of enemy airstrikes.
Despite the ongoing violence, negotiations between the two warring nations are expected to resume soon in Istanbul, though a resolution still appears distant.
Russia is reportedly trying to gain ground, but according to the U.S.-based think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Moscow is deploying poorly trained troops who are struggling against Ukraine’s increasingly effective use of drones.
