Ukraine dismantles Hungarian spy ring stealing sensitive military data

Ukrainian authorities have announced the dismantling of a spy network allegedly involved in stealing sensitive military data within the country.

Hungary’s intelligence ministry dismissed the claim as “propaganda” and responded by expelling two Ukrainian nationals accused of “espionage under diplomatic cover.”

The incident threatens to further strain diplomatic relations between the two nations. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been openly critical of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and has frequently blocked EU aid intended for Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) stated that two experienced Ukrainian military personnel were detained as part of the operation, which focused on identifying leaks of information related to Western defense systems deployed in the country.

According to the SBU, the espionage network was coordinated by a Hungarian intelligence officer and aimed to uncover vulnerabilities in Ukraine’s defensive infrastructure.

“By forming an agent network, foreign intelligence hoped to expand the range of information collection, including obtaining data from frontline and frontline regions,” the SBU said in a statement.
