Ukraine develops model to combat Russian influence

The development of the first large-scale Ukrainian-language artificial intelligence model has begun in Ukraine.

An LLM (large language model) is the foundation for creating AI-powered products such as chatbots, analytics systems, document automation tools, voice assistants, and more. The development of a dedicated Ukrainian language model is an important step towards the country's digital independence, according to Mykhailo Fedorov, head of the Ministry of Digital Transformation.

"A national language model is the foundation for new AI products in the country, for startups, investments, and the growth of the Ukrainian economy."

The goal of this programme is also to continue strengthening Ukrainian identity and combat Russian influence.

The developers specify that the LLM will be trained exclusively on a corpus of Ukrainian texts, ranging from public sources to historical and cultural documents. This will allow the model to better understand the Ukrainian context, language, and communication nuances, which will distinguish it from its foreign counterparts.

The first public release of the language model is planned for the end of 2025. It will be made available to government agencies, educational and scientific institutions, public organizations, and businesses.
