Starmer pledges tougher immigration rules to avoid ‘island of strangers’

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a series of new measures aimed at tightening immigration controls, warning that Britain must avoid becoming “an island of strangers.”

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer pledged to regain control of the country’s borders and crack down on illegal immigration. His remarks come just ahead of the release of a Home Office report detailing stricter visa requirements, including the introduction of a mandatory English language test.

The Home Office has set a target to significantly reduce migration numbers, aiming to bring them down to 300,000 by 2029.

“Nations depend on rules—fair rules,” Starmer said. “Sometimes they’re written down, often they are not, but either way, they give shape to our values. They guide us to our rights, yes, but also to our responsibilities—the obligations we owe one another.”

“In a diverse nation like ours—and I welcome that diversity—these rules are even more vital. Without them, we risk becoming an island of strangers, not a country moving forward together,” he added.
