JD Vance sends bleak warning over Ukraine war

U.S. Vice President JD Vance has warned that the outcome of the war in Ukraine now lies in the hands of Kyiv and Moscow, following Washington’s announcement that it will no longer act as a mediator in the conflict.

Last week, President Donald Trump threatened to pull out of peace efforts if no concrete progress was made, and this week, the State Department confirmed that while the U.S. will continue to support peace efforts, it is scaling back its direct involvement.

Following the announcement, Vance acknowledged that an end to the war is not on the immediate horizon.

“It is going to be up to the Russians and Ukrainians now that each side knows what the other’s terms for peace are. It's going to be up to them to come to an agreement and stop this brutal, brutal conflict,” he said.

Despite promising negotiations recently held in Saudi Arabia, talks between Washington and Moscow quickly broke down over differing views on ceasefire conditions.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has since called on Ukraine to observe a three-day ceasefire beginning May 8, allowing Russia to commemorate Victory Day on the following day.
