U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth admitted during a congressional hearing on Thursday that the Pentagon has military contingency plans for both Greenland and Panama.
Since Donald Trump’s return to the White House, the president has repeatedly expressed his desire to acquire Greenland—by any means necessary. The Arctic territory, which belongs to Denmark, recently announced it is collaborating on 13 projects with European Union member states, further distancing itself from U.S. influence.
Lawmakers questioned Hegseth directly about whether the Department of Defense had considered military options for Greenland and Panama.
“Our job, at the DOD, is to have plans. Our job at the Defense Department is to have plans for any particular contingency. Any contingency—we’ve got it. We’ve got a building full of planners, and we’re prepared to give recommendations whenever needed", he said.
The defense secretary argued that most Americans would expect the Pentagon to be prepared for any scenario, especially strategic contingencies.
Greenland, for its part, has repeatedly rejected American pressure, stating clearly that the territory is not for sale.
