Turning point in the War in Ukraine: Germany steps in

Friedrich Merz, the future German Chancellor, expresses his desire to maintain military support for Kiev.

The incoming head of the new German government, starting in early May, recently condemned the "serious war crime" committed by Russian forces in Sumy, a city located in north-eastern Ukraine. At least 34 people lost their lives in this bombing, marking the deadliest strike on a civilian area in months, according to the media outlet L’Indépendant. "This is a wicked act […] and it's a grave, deliberate and intentional war crime," said Merz on the ARD channel.

Taurus missiles ready to take action

The leader of the conservative party, who won the legislative elections in Germany at the end of February, openly shows his willingness to continue military aid to Kiev. While the outgoing Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, opposed sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine (missiles that could strike deep into Russian territory), Friedrich Merz has expressed openness to this possibility. "I have always said I would only do it in agreement with European partners," he stated. "It must be coordinated and if it's coordinated, then Germany should participate." According to Merz, "the Ukrainian army needs to get out of its defensive position. It's merely reacting".

For the record, after the United States, Germany has been the second-largest provider of military aid to Kiev.
