Tulsi Gabbard has warned that Iran could be capable of assembling nuclear weapons “within weeks”—a stark reversal from comments she made just months ago during a congressional hearing.
Back in March, the U.S. Director of National Intelligence said that while Iran possessed nuclear materials, Tehran had shown no intent to build a nuclear arsenal.
Gabbard’s abrupt shift in position follows public criticism from President Donald Trump, who claimed that U.S. intelligence was well aware Iran had sufficient material to produce nuclear weapons in the near future.
Tehran has consistently maintained that its nuclear program is strictly for civilian purposes and energy needs.
Earlier this week, the U.S. President said he would take two weeks to decide whether the United States should back Israel in its military actions against Iran.
On Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Iran is “absolutely ready for a negotiated solution” regarding its nuclear program—but emphasized that talks could not begin while the country is under attack.
