Will Congress have to seek explanations from Donald Trump? A senator, Democrat Adam Shiff, has called for an official investigation into insider trading and market manipulation.

By playing yo-yo with tariffs and giving hints on his social media network Truth Social, did Donald Trump commit insider trading? At least, that's what the senator, Democrat Adam Shiff, believes. He has asked Congress to conduct an official investigation following Trump's announcement of a 90-day pause on tariffs, except for China. This decision led to a rise in stock markets, following a nearly general decline. What annoys the senator is the prior communication of White House decisions. Donald Trump has repeatedly posted on social media networks, especially Truth Social, to urge not to sell and to stay calm.

Even more troubling, a message posted at the opening of the markets, shortly before his U-turn, on 9 April 2025, states: "It's the perfect time to buy!!!" with the initials DJT also used by his media empire. It remains to be seen how the senator's request will be received in Congress. In any case, White House spokesperson Kush Desai reacted by writing: "It's the responsibility of the President of the United States to reassure the markets and Americans about their economic security in the face of constant media alarmism."
