A 28-year-old man was seriously injured last week while on holiday on the Greek island of Crete.

He was hiking on Mount Gingilos, near the famous Samaria Gorge, but slipped and fell a staggering 25 metres down.

The man sustained injuries to his head and leg and was forced to spend the night outside, waiting for help. A group of Greek hikers eventually spotted him and alerted the rescue services. Despite this, the man could only be located after a rescue operation that lasted many hours. Initially, a helicopter was deployed, but it failed to land in the area, prompting a decision to search for the young man on foot. Ultimately, he was rescued from his perilous situation and transferred to Chania Hospital.

The man holds Belgian nationality, but lives and works in the Netherlands.
