Too many tornadoes in France? The country records a higher rate than normal.

This is what the report by Keraunos, the French observatory of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms, indicates. “The year 2024 showed higher than normal tornado activity, with frequent tornadoes in spring and autumn.” In just one year, 30 tornadoes were recorded in France.

Keraunos continues: “The year 2024 was marked by a significant EF2 level tornado: the Carlepont tornado of 18 June 2024 in Oise,” describing the distribution of the phenomenon as “unusual” with “usual” tornadoes in the northwest of the country, and more surprising ones in the centre-east and southwest. With 3 recorded tornadoes, the Côte-d'Or department was the most affected.

In France, tornado activity reached a record in 2014, with 50 tornadoes.
