Shampoo, tea bags, soap... all these products are provided so you can have the best possible stay in your hotel. However, some of them could cause you a lot of trouble.
Jannessa Richards, a former hotel employee, reveals in a TikTok video the object that is almost never cleaned in your hotel room. "I strongly recommend not using them at all, as they are neither washed nor replaced between bookings as long as they look clean", she explains. And what is Richards talking about? The glasses carefully placed next to the sink, on the TV stand or bedside table! In France, since 1 January 2025, single-use plastic packaging, including the covers for glasses, has been banned by the AGEC law, according to the media outlet L’internaute. And since this measure was implemented, hotel staff have found it much harder to tell if a glass has been used or not.
A real breeding ground for bacteria
In order not to waste water, glasses are only cleaned if they appear to have been used, and are sometimes just “rinsed with hot water”. This habit leads to major hygiene concerns. In fact, according to a study from the University of Houston, "more than 80% of the objects analysed in hotels contained bacteria of faecal origin".
Katie Kirsch, who led this study, recommends either washing the glasses yourself or, even simpler (but less convenient), not using them at all.
