On June 24, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un inaugurated what was described as one of Pyongyang's "greatest feats" of the year.
The achievement is the materialization, after a decade of construction, of the Wonsan Kalma seaside resort. Citing the country's news agency, the Guardian reports that the tourist complex is located on the east coast of North Korea and is equipped with sports, leisure, and restaurant facilities.
The Wonsan Kalma seaside resort opens today, July 1, 2025. According to authorities, 20,000 visitors could enjoy this paradise each year.
Soon to reach global status?
The North Korean leader himself is said to be convinced that "the wave of happiness that will be raised in the Wonsan Kalma coastal tourist area will strengthen the appeal of its name as a world-class cultural tourist resort." He asserts that the complex "would play a leading role in establishing the country's tourism culture."
Currently, only residents of North Korea, where tourism is struggling to (re)take off, particularly since the Covid-19 pandemic, could book holidays there.
