On June 24, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un inaugurated what was described by Pyongyang as one of its "greatest achievements" of the year.
The achievement is the completion, after a decade of construction, of the Wonsan Kalma resort. Citing the country's news agency, The Guardian reports that the resort is located on North Korea's east coast and is equipped with sports, leisure, and restaurant facilities.
The Wonsan Kalma resort opens today, July 1, 2025. According to authorities, 20,000 visitors could enjoy this paradise each year.
Soon to reach global status?
The North Korean leader himself is said to be convinced that "the wave of happiness that will be stirred up in the Wonsan Kalma coastal tourist area will strengthen its reputation as a world-class cultural tourism resort." He asserted that the complex would "play a leading role in establishing the country's tourism culture."
Currently, only residents of North Korea, where tourism has struggled to (re)emerge, particularly since the Covid-19 pandemic, could book vacations there.
