The French arms industry has developed its first kamikaze drone, also called the "Colibri".
Sébastien Lecornu, the French Minister of the Armed Forces, announced in mid-October 2024: all tests of the "Colibri" have been conclusive. Furthermore, it will soon be deployed to support Kyiv. "I have decided to order 2000 tele-operated munitions, both for the needs of the French army and for Ukraine. [...] Kamikaze drones are absolutely essential in the conduct of operations," Lecornu stated in March 2024, during a visit to Delair, the manufacturer of these drones in partnership with the giant KNDS, as highlighted by the media Midi Libre.
Better competing with Putin's army
A spokesperson for KNDS France, quoted by the media 20 Minutes, said that the "Colibri is intended to neutralise static targets and moving light vehicles, such as a pick-up truck travelling at 50km/h on a track". This kamikaze (or suicide) drone is deployed discreetly and very quickly to strike its target several kilometres away. It has a flight autonomy of 45 minutes and is capable of carrying a 500-gram payload. One more noteworthy advantage? Its effective resistance to communication jamming (omnipresent on the front line).
From November, several "Colibri" will be delivered to Ukrainian forces. A French weapon, developed in 6 months, which will allow for better competition with the technical means (including Iranian drones) of Vladimir Putin's army, notes Midi Libre.
