The world’s smallest snake has been rediscovered in Barbados, 20 years after it was last seen.

The Barbados threadsnake, a species native to the Caribbean island, was found beneath a rock in the island’s central region during a field study conducted this March by the Ministry of the Environment.

The snake measures just 10 centimeters (about 4 inches) in length and is as thin as a strand of spaghetti.

Connor Blades, a project officer at the local environment ministry, said: “If the threadsnake population is not very dense, I’m concerned about their ability to find mates, especially if their habitat is under threat or being degraded.

The first recorded sighting of the threadsnake dates back to 1889, with several others reported since then.

Local conservationists fear the species may be at risk of extinction due to ongoing habitat destruction and the presence of invasive species.
