The White House has denied that the deportation of more than 200 Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador was illegal, despite complaints from multiple human rights organizations.

A group of 238 Venezuelans, allegedly linked to gangs, along with 23 presumed members of MS-13, were deported to a high-security prison in the Central American country.

While the Trump administration invoked an 18th-century law to justify these deportations, a court ruled that the legislation could not be applied in this case.

Neither the U.S. nor El Salvador has disclosed the identities of the detainees or provided evidence of their gang affiliations.

Over the weekend, Donald Trump referenced the Alien Enemies Act, a law dating back to 1798, which was originally enacted to deport foreign nationals during times of war or invasion.
