The White House has criticized Amazon for reportedly planning to inform customers why products on its platform are now more expensive.
Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, referenced a Punchbowl News report citing a source who claimed the e-commerce giant is considering adding notices on product listings to highlight how international tariffs are impacting prices—especially for goods manufactured in China.
Since President Donald Trump announced a new wave of global tariffs, prices for many products sold on Amazon have surged. However, Amazon has publicly distanced itself from the report and has not confirmed any such move.
Relations between Trump and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos have historically been strained, but recent signs suggest a warming of ties. Bezos attended Trump’s inauguration earlier this year, and Amazon contributed $1 million to the president’s inaugural fund.
