US secretly struck deal with Russia behind allies’ back

The United States reportedly engaged in backchannel discussions with Russia over a draft United Nations resolution marking the third anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine — without informing its allies. However, several pro-Ukraine nations intervened to block the resolution from moving forward.

According to French newspaper Le Monde, Ukraine had prepared a resolution for the occasion, condemning Russian aggression and demanding a full withdrawal of Russian troops. But U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Dorothy Shea allegedly told France and the United Kingdom that Ukraine should abandon its version of the resolution.

Instead, Washington sought to push through a resolution it had quietly discussed with Moscow, intending for it to be backed by European nations who were not informed of the negotiations.

The move was perceived as a betrayal, triggering an emergency meeting among European diplomats to devise a response.

As permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, France and the United Kingdom took decisive action. The U.K. rebuked Washington directly at the Security Council, while France led diplomatic efforts at the General Assembly.

Under pressure, the U.S. was forced to amend the draft resolution, ultimately including language affirming Ukraine’s territorial integrity—a key demand from European partners.

Back in February, the United States voted against Ukraine’s own resolution that clearly condemned the Russian invasion, further fueling tensions among allies.
