US deploys stealth fighters near China as tensions mount between the two superpowers

The United States has recently deployed an additional squadron of stealth fighters to Japan in response to China’s growing military presence in the region.

The 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, a U.S. Marine Corps unit based in Japan, confirmed to Newsweek that there are now four squadrons of F-35s stationed in the country.

In recent months, the U.S. has ramped up joint military exercises with regional allies including Japan and South Korea, as China continues to expand its activity in nearby waters.

“The [Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 211] will augment 1st Marine Aircraft Wing in providing critical aviation support from naval and expeditionary environments,” the unit stated. “This allows the Marine Corps to ensure operational readiness as obligated in support of the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security.”

The aircraft were deployed as part of the Marine Corps’ Unit Deployment Program, which aims to give U.S.-based units hands-on operational experience in the Indo-Pacific region through ongoing, overlapping deployments.
