The U.S. military aircraft known as the “Doomsday Plane” has recently landed near Washington, D.C., amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
The E-4B Nightwatch, a militarized Boeing 747 designed to serve as a mobile command center during a national emergency, touched down earlier this week as President Donald Trump announced a two-week pause to assess the next steps in America's approach toward Iran.
As missiles continue to rain down on both Iran and Israel, Trump briefly considered launching a direct strike on Tehran. However, he ultimately decided to hold back in hopes that Iranian leadership will agree to enter negotiations.
The E-4B Nightwatch is equipped to serve as a highly survivable airborne command post capable of directing U.S. military forces, executing emergency war orders, and coordinating efforts between military and civilian authorities in the event of a catastrophic event.
“In case of national emergency or destruction of ground command and control centers, the aircraft provides a highly survivable command, control and communications center to direct U.S. forces, execute emergency war orders, and coordinate actions by civil authorities,” the U.S. Air Force said in a statement.
On the Iranian side, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has warned that any U.S. military strike on Iran would be met with “irreparable damage.”
