Trump pledges ‘agressive’ plan to revoke visas of Chinese students

The Trump administration has pledged to "aggressively" restrict student visas for Chinese nationals studying in the United States.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the decision would target “those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields.”

Tensions between Beijing and Washington have worsened in recent weeks, largely due to the ongoing trade war initiated by Donald Trump. However, delegations from both countries recently met in Switzerland in an effort to reach an agreement.

Future visa applications from students residing in China and Hong Kong will undergo heightened scrutiny before any approvals are granted.

Rubio said in a statement: “Under President Trump's leadership, the US State Department will work with the Department of Homeland Security to aggressively revoke visas for Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields. We will also revise visa criteria to enhance scrutiny of all future visa applications from the People’s Republic of China and Hong Kong.”

The Trump administration has already attempted to deport a number of Chinese students or cancel their visas, though several of these efforts have been challenged in court.
