Pope Léon XIV evoked the war between Russia and Ukraine during his first interview since his nomination.
"I am very conscious of the implications of considering the Vatican as a mediator," said the new pope. Léon XIV wants to strengthen the role of the Vatican as a promoter of peace and facilitator of dialogue, but emphasizes that the Holy See should not act as a direct mediator in the war in Ukraine, but rather as a neutral voice and host of eventual international negotiations.
The pope reaffirmed that the main mission of the Vatican was to plead in favour of peace, to promote humanitarian values and to offer neutral spaces for dialogue. He insists on the fact that the international community and external actors must press for the belligerent parties to seek a peaceful solution.
Dans ses déclarations faites en September 2025, Léon XIV appeals to overcome hatred and violence, reaffirming his faith in human nature and the importance of hope. The Pope also addressed a special message to President Zelensky on the occasion of Ukraine's Independence Day, expressing his desire for dialogue and peace.
