Suicides, murders, falls or accidents: the suspicious list of strange deaths surrounding Putin is growing with the death of his former transport minister.
The list of people who have died in strange circumstances in Russia is far too long not to raise questions. All of them are people who worked with President Vladimir Putin or who criticised him at one time or another. To this list, we have just added another suicide of someone close to him. It was his transport minister, who had been sacked a few hours earlier. Roman Starovoit is the latest in a long line of strange deaths. Roman Starovoit was found shot dead in his vehicle.
Mr Starovoit, who previously headed the Kursk region, neighbouring Ukraine, was suddenly sacked from his post as Transport Minister this week, without the Kremlin giving an official reason.
Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, at least 22 businessmen and politicians have died. Always suicides, murders without a culprit or falls like that of Ravil Maganov, chairman of the Lukoil oil company, who fell out of a window in a Moscow hospital. Andrei Badalov, vice-president of Transneft, Russia's largest oil pipeline producer, also fell out of a window, but the Russian media claimed at the time that he had committed suicide.
