Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev stated on Thursday that the minerals and rare earths agreement signed between the US and Ukraine means Kyiv will have to pay for American military aid with the country's mineral wealth.

"Donald Trump has finally bent the Kyiv regime to pay American aid with useful minerals. Now, military supplies will have to be paid for with the national wealth of a dwindling country," said Mr Medvedev on his Telegram channel.

However, the former right-hand man of the current Russian president, Vladimir Putin, believes it remains to be seen how Mr Trump will handle his declining popularity and "the fierce resistance of the deep state".

On the occasion of International Workers' Day, the former Russian president (2008-2012) congratulated the United States for its efforts in the tariff struggle against the instability created in the world, but especially in the European Union.

Medvedev mocked the fact that Russia isn't affected by these tariffs, as there are no trade flows between his country and the United States.
