The European Union has urged residents to stock up on supplies to survive for 72 hours in the event of a major crisis such as a pandemic, war, or large-scale flooding.

The European Commission explained that it wants to encourage Europeans to be prepared for any continental or global emergency, advising them to build emergency provisions.

This initiative takes inspiration from Nordic countries and Germany, which have distributed brochures and launched apps offering guidance on how citizens should respond during a conflict or national crisis.

We are saying to member states: 72 hours of self-sufficiency is what we recommend,” said Hadja Lahbib, the European Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management, during a press conference.

Lahbib also shared a video listing essential items to keep on hand, including a Swiss army knife, a small radio, and medications.

The strategy is designed to ensure the public is ready to face various large-scale threats, including severe climate events, pandemics, or cyberattacks.

We must prepare for large-scale, cross-sectoral incidents and crises, including the possibility of armed aggression, affecting one or more member states,” the EU document states.
