The economic setback Putin fears most

EU energy ministers will discuss ending energy contracts with Russia for 2027, mainly for gas.

The European Commission will present in the coming days the legal formula allowing EU companies to cancel these agreements without incurring financial penalties.

“We are sending a very clear signal to Russia: we will no longer allow it to use energy as a weapon of war,” stated Dan Jørgensen, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, as he entered a closed-door council of EU energy ministers to discuss the issue.

The commissioner said he expected “very clear support” from the capitals and assured that the executive was working to ensure “that no Member State faces supply security problems.”
