Tesla, the electric car company owned by Elon Musk, has warned that U.S. exports—including its own—could be severely impacted if new tariffs are implemented.

Musk, who was recently appointed head of the DOGE to oversee federal workforce reductions, remains a close ally of Donald Trump but is currently going through a rough patch.

In an unsigned letter addressed to U.S. trade representatives, Tesla stated that while it supports fair trade, it warned that American exporters could face "disproportionate consequences" if other countries retaliate with their own tariffs.

The letter was dated on the same day that Trump announced at a White House event that he planned to buy a Tesla. However, it is unclear whether Musk was aware of the letter at the time.

Since the start of 2025, Tesla’s stock has plunged by 40%, largely due to Musk’s growing political influence and ongoing factory strikes disrupting production.
