Sweden hurries to get nuclear bunkers ready amid Russian threats

Sweden has announced a €9 million modernization plan for its civilian bunkers as the country prepares for the possibility of conflict.

The Scandinavian nation, which shares a maritime border with Russia, has approximately 64,000 bunkers spread across its territory. These shelters can accommodate up to seven million people, covering three-quarters of the country's population.

The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) will begin inspecting these facilities, which are designed to withstand radiation, gas explosions, and chemical weapons.

This initiative comes as the Swedish government continues to bolster national defense in response to potential threats from Moscow.

In January, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson warned that while Sweden was "not at war, it was not at peace either."

This year, the Swedish leader has pledged to increase defense spending to 2.4% of GDP to further strengthen the country’s military capabilities in this time of heightened tensions.
