Attention for those driving through France this summer: 'intelligent' speed checks can detect multiple violations in one flash, and the fine can take a significant chunk out of the holiday budget.
The French budget for 2025 includes a plan to expand the number of speed cameras to 4,160. At least 500 of those are 'super cameras' that can register other traffic violations than speeding and running red lights: these cameras can detect if you are not wearing a seatbelt, not maintaining a safe distance, or holding a phone.
The advanced systems use artificial intelligence and can issue up to four fines at once, to a maximum of 540 euros in one go.
The French government is allocating 46.3 million euros for the update of the speed cameras. French motorists' organisations argue that financial gains are taking precedence over road safety. They advocate for more physical checks by the police.
