In a chaotic accident involving a tourist submarine, at least six people were killed on Thursday in Hurghada, Egypt.
The submarine was supposed to take tourists to the coral reefs off the coast, but things went disastrously wrong on Thursday. The submarine began sinking as the tourists boarded. Because the hatches were still open, the submarine immediately filled with water. It is not yet clear whether it was due to a technical issue or human error.
“The man responsible for boarding began shouting loudly: 'stop, stop, stop,' and pushed us back to the pontoons. The panic was enormous. Some people managed to leave the submarine by swimming, others unfortunately sank to the bottom of the Red Sea. It all happened so quickly. The water rushed in through the open hatches”, recounts Elena Boldareva, who boarded with her husband, to Het Nieuwsblad.
