Growing nearly a meter in ten years of existence? This is Adam Rainer's incredible story.

An incredibly sad story. Adam Rainer was born in 1899 in Austria-Hungary. His parents quickly became concerned about his growth: at 18, Adam was only 1 meter and 22 centimeters tall. Medically, he suffered from short stature, due to a bone growth abnormality known as "dwarfism."

At 21, his life suddenly changed. Adam Rainer, then considered a "dwarf," experienced extraordinary growth spurts. He is a unique case in our history. He is, in fact, the only man to have experienced both extremes, going from dwarf to giant in just a few years.

No miracle

Unfortunately, the explanation for this impressive growth spurt was no miracle. Doctors identified a tumor in Adam's pituitary gland. As the media outlet Ça m’intéresse reports, this tumor flooded his body with growth hormones, and Rainer gained 10 centimeters per year. At 33, he was no less than 2.18 meters tall! He suffered from scoliosis, which forced him to remain bedridden for the rest of his life. Over time, he lost hearing in his left ear and partial sight in his right eye. And although doctors managed to remove the tumor, his growth continued unabated, and his condition only deteriorated. He died on March 4, 1950, at only 51 years old, from kyphosis. Adam Rainer measured 2.34 meters at the time of his death.

Dwarf and Giant, in Medicine

An adult who is less than 1.40 meters tall in medicine is considered a dwarf, a person of short stature. This height is mainly explained by hormonal or bone abnormalities. Unlike dwarfism, gigantism has no specific threshold; it is characterized by a height that is well above average. This significant growth is generally due to a malfunction of the pituitary gland located in the brain, which is responsible for the production of growth hormone.
