Francis Ford Coppola celebrated his 86th birthday in early April and recently attended the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to receive a prestigious award: the AFI (American Film Institute) Lifetime Achievement Award.
It was Steven Spielberg himself who came to praise Coppola and especially his masterpiece. The multi-award-winning director declared that the greatest American film in history was "The Godfather" released in 1972.
Spielberg was full of praise for the film, emphatically stating "there is no debate" that "The Godfather is the greatest American film of all time", even challenging the rest of the audience to name a better one: "Can anyone disagree with that?"
Spielberg also addressed some kind words to Francis Ford Coppola, stating that he was "someone unmatched" and highlighting his greatest achievement: "You have redefined the canon of American cinema and inspired an entire generation of storytellers in film."
