Spain has begun exploring the possibility of linking Europe to Africa via an undersea tunnel.

Over the weekend, the Spanish government allocated €1.6 million for a feasibility study on the ambitious project, which would connect the Iberian Peninsula to Morocco through the Strait of Gibraltar.

The idea has been backed by both countries for decades. If completed, the tunnel would stretch 27.7 kilometers beneath the Mediterranean Sea.

The project is primarily championed by Spain’s Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, who also heads the Spanish Company for Studies on Fixed Communication across the Gibraltar Strait (SECEGSA).

In a statement, the Spanish Ministry of Transport said: “This permanent link infrastructure across the Strait would constitute an essential link in the Euro-Mediterranean transport network. The facilitation of passenger, goods and services flows will produce a quantitative and qualitative acceleration of the economy.
