Slovakia will veto the European Union's (EU) new package of sanctions against Russia, which will be put to a vote in Brussels this Friday, saying its request to amend a legislative act aimed at completely banning the flow of Russian gas to Europe from January 1, 2028, has been ignored.

In a video posted on his Facebook account, Robert Fico, who is attending the EU leaders' summit in Brussels, reaffirmed his country's position that the legislative act proposed by the European Commission under the name "RepowerEU" is far more detrimental to its economic interests than the new, eighteenth, sanctions package.

This is why Bratislava is demanding a fundamental amendment to this proposal before giving the green light to the new sanctions. Unlike sanctions packages, which require unanimity in voting, the legislative act can be adopted by qualified majority. "The same legislative act aimed at stopping the flow of Russian gas from January 1, 2028, we consider to be a sanctions package with much more far-reaching consequences," Fico said.
