Security advisers have urged British families to prepare 72-hour survival kits, as the country grows increasingly concerned about potential Russian sabotage of critical energy infrastructure.

In recent years, the UK has become heavily reliant on energy imports, having shut down its last coal-fired power plants to meet its zero-emission targets.

Around 40% of Britain’s gas supply comes from Norway, transported via the Langeled pipeline.

Last year, Defence Secretary John Healey ordered a Royal Navy submarine to surface near the Russian intelligence vessel Yantar after it was suspected of interfering with undersea cables in the Irish Sea.

A source told The Mail: "We know the Russians are active in the North Sea and have the capability to cripple our energy links."

British intelligence also suspects that Russia may have installed listening devices on offshore wind turbines to track the movements of Royal Navy submarines.
