It's confirmed by the scientific community: within 30 years, a violent tsunami is expected to hit Europe, particularly affecting regions along the Mediterranean coast.
With climate change, we're witnessing an acceleration of ice melting and sea level rise, increasing the risk of tsunami. Tsunamis are a natural phenomenon, often triggered by earthquakes, that can result in waves up to 10 metres high!
The affected regions
According to a recent study named “Probabilistic tsunami in the Mediterranean Sea”, a violent tsunami is expected to hit the Mediterranean coasts within the next 30 years, reports the media Demotivateur. The prediction was already made public by Unesco in 2022. According to this new study, certain areas are more exposed to the dangers of this tsunami. Among them, Southern Spain, the Balearic Islands, Valencia, Malaga…, and the Spanish Atlantic coast could be hit by waves up to 6 metres high, a phenomenon that would be immediate and could strike Spain in just 25 minutes.
Southwest Spain, the Basque Country, Cantabria, and the Arabian Peninsula, however, would be spared (with waves of half a metre).
In light of the urgency of the situation
Scientists estimate a 100% probability that a tsunami will hit the Mediterranean coasts within the next 30 years, specifies Demotivateur. According to them, it's urgent to invest in effective tsunami warning systems. “Statistics show that the probability of a tsunami wave over 1 metre in the Mediterranean in the next 30 years is close to 100%”, the study highlights.
