Scientists have identified early warning signs of a potential volcanic eruption at Mount Spurr, located in Alaska.

The last eruption occurred in 1992, but the volcano has shown increasing activity over the past few months. According to the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO), an eruption now appears likely.

Experts at the observatory estimate that an eruption could occur in as little as three weeks. In a recent report, they noted that a "robust plume" had been observed at the volcano’s summit.

The AVO stated in its latest update: "The increase in gas emissions confirms that new magma has intruded into the Earth's crust beneath the volcano and indicates that an eruption is likely, but not certain, to occur within the next few weeks or months."

However, scientists also clarified that the plume alone is not necessarily a sign of an impending eruption.

"These observations, in tandem with the favorable atmospheric conditions, suggest the robust plume from Mount Spurr in recent days was not a result of increased volcanic activity," they added.
