Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday. They discussed the situation in Ukraine and reaffirmed the strategic nature of their bilateral relations.
During the conversation, Mr. Putin, who, according to Xinhua News Agency, initiated the call, explained Russia's position on the war in Ukraine and praised China's role in finding a political solution. Mr. Xi, for his part, reaffirmed that Beijing would maintain its stance of promoting dialogue and fostering a ceasefire, regardless of how the situation develops. Xi said China welcomes the rapprochement between Moscow and Washington, supports the improvement of bilateral relations, and encourages a political solution to the conflict in Ukraine.
"Complex problems have no simple solutions," said the Chinese leader, who urged all parties to keep communication channels open and continue negotiations. The two leaders emphasized the "high level of mutual political trust and strategic coordination" between their countries.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, China has refrained from condemning the invasion and has defended Moscow's "legitimate security concerns," repeatedly reiterating the need to resolve the conflict through diplomatic means.
