Republican senator demands ‘bone-crushing’ sanctions against Russia

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has pledged to push through a sweeping package of sanctions designed to cripple Russia’s economy, including a dramatic proposal to impose 500% tariffs on any country purchasing Russian oil or gas.

However, the proposal could backfire on the United States, as several European allies still rely on Russian energy imports. Graham appears to have taken this into account and is seeking to exempt European countries from the punitive tariffs, although some experts question whether the sanctions package is even feasible in its current form.

India and China currently account for 70% of Russia’s energy exports, but other nations importing oil, gas, or even uranium from Moscow would also face penalties under the proposed legislation.

Imposing 500% tariffs on Chinese goods could lead to a sharp increase in prices, severe disruptions to global supply chains, and potentially trigger a recession in the United States.

The legislation is expected to undergo significant revisions as it moves through Congress and will likely face further scrutiny if reviewed by a future Trump administration.
