Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed on Thursday to establish a "temporary" government in Ukraine under the auspices of the UN and the United States, among others, to organise elections and then start negotiations towards a peace agreement.

"It would be possible to discuss with the United States, European countries, our partners and friends, the possibility of introducing temporary governance in Ukraine under the auspices of the UN, in order to organise democratic elections, establish a viable government enjoying the confidence of the population, and then start negotiations for a peace treaty," Mr Putin stated.

According to Mr Putin, this cabinet would allow the signing of "legitimate documents that would be recognised worldwide and reliable". He added, "But that's just one of the options. I'm not saying there aren't others (...) But it's one of the options and it's a practice that exists at the United Nations".

The Russian leader assured that he was "in favour of resolving all problems by peaceful means", but emphasised that he must "ensure Russia's security from a long-term historical perspective".
