A phone call is scheduled for Tuesday between the American President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump. How exactly does that work?

Both presidents will communicate in their own language, even though President Putin is said to speak English quite well. The telephone conversation will therefore take place via interpreters. In addition to the interpreters, assistants to both presidents will also follow the conversation. Certain conversations between world leaders have been known to involve as many as thirty people in the ‘telephone room’.

The American security services will certainly be concerned about the phone that President Trump will use. He will be advised to use the highly secure line in the Oval Office, but it is also known that Trump in his first term of office sometimes used his (unsecured) iPhone when he called a world leader.

We know that Putin is not a fan of smartphones: it is almost certain that he will use the landline in the Kremlin.
