One of the biggest geological mysteries surrounding our planet is known as The Great Unconformity. It refers to the disappearance of a significant portion of Earth’s crust, a gap in the geological record spanning hundreds of millions of years.

Recent research suggests that severe glacial erosion may be responsible for this massive loss.

The phenomenon was first observed in 1869 in the Grand Canyon, Arizona, where geologists noticed an abrupt change in the age of rock layers. Over time, they found that this sudden shift occurs in many locations around the world, leading to the nickname "The Great Unconformity."

The lead author of the study, Dr. Brenhin Keller from the Berkeley Geochronology Center, explained that the scale of rock loss is staggering. He and his team estimate that approximately one billion cubic kilometers (about 200 million cubic miles) of Precambrian material has been eroded away.
